How much does charred wood cost?

Burnt wood pricing depends on several key factors but starting price is from €22/m² + VAT, however the final amount is calculated individually for each project.

What affects the price?

  • Wood species – spruce is most common; other options (e.g., larch) are available.
  • Board profile & dimensions – thicker boards or non-standard profiles/lengths may cost more.
  • Order size – larger projects often qualify for discounts.

Smaller facade cladding or decking projects may cost a few hundred euros, while larger builds can run into several thousand. An accurate quote requires your project area (m²) and chosen profile.

Higher-quality, carefully processed charred wood offers greater durability and longevity – helping the investment pay off over time.

Durability

Charring process naturally increases the wood’s surface resistance to environmental factors. It absorbs less moisture and becomes more resistant to rot and insect damage.

Easy maintenance

Burnt wood is simple to care for – just wipe the surface from time to time and refresh the color when desired. This helps the finish retain its appearance and resistance for longer.

Eco-friendly

Burnt wood is treated only with heat, no chemical preservatives, making it’s a natural way to enhance the wood’s surface properties and appearance.

Aesthetics

Burnt wood stands out with its unique surface – natural wood grain appears more visible is highlighted with oil. The finish can range from deep dark shades to rich, saturated tones.

Still have questions?

frequently asked questions

Although burnt wood (Shou Sugi Ban) is resistant to environmental factors, it still benefits from periodic maintenance to preserve its appearance and longevity. Routine care for facades, terraces/decks, and fences extends service life and helps the surface retain its original color.

Recommended maintenance intervals for facades & fences are re-oiling every 5–7 years. Due to foot traffic and wear terraces require more frequent re-oiling approximately every 1–3 years.

With proper care, burnt wood (Shou Sugi Ban) can last for decades. Actual service life depends on exposure conditions and maintenance.

What shortens lifespan?

  • Direct sun & rain: UV and moisture accelerate wear; south- or west-facing elevations often need more frequent upkeep.
  • Use case: Decking/terraces see abrasion and will need maintenance sooner than cladding.
  • Maintenance frequency: Longevity is directly tied to regular cleaning and timely re-oiling.

Installing burnt wood is the same as installing untreated or painted timber.
For the best results, use stainless-steel screws to ensure a strong, long-lasting fix. Fasteners should be corrosion-resistant and fitted carefully so they don’t damage the charred surface.

Installation tips

  • Acclimate boards on site (well-ventilated, out of rain) before fixing.
  • Substructure: straight, dry battens/joists.
  • Pre-drill & countersink; drive two screws per support, avoid over-tightening.
  • Screw grade: A2 stainless for most sites; A4 for coastal/high-corrosion areas.
  • Gaps: allow for movement board-to-board and perimeter expansion gaps.
  • Cut ends: seal with matching exterior oil; handle gently to protect the char layer.
